Method
Teams of 4 – 8 individuals each complete tasks, acquiring bonus or penalty points, related to time or skill. 'Time' and 'skill' tasks follow each other and points acquired often determine the difficulty of the task that follows (improved 'survivor style'). Depending on tribe choice, some members or all of the tribe members get assigned (by the tribe) to the active part of the task, while the remaining members provide implementation or moral support. Stages flow into each other, assuring the minimum idle time.
Each tribe starts with the same amount of beans, representing points. As the challenge progress, they obtain or lose performance related penalty and bonus points.
Rough event detail
Participants assemble in the peaceful Mkomazi valley. A briefing takes teams through the program, the aims are explained and the method. We hand over a bag of tricks to each team, to help them through our paces !
Task 1
Adventure Bikes
Teams are allowed 5 minutes to identify members with the applicable strengths, and the Games Begin ! Three 'adventure cyclists' are identified. These take turns at running the gauntlets and the fun obstacles with Mountain Bikes, on a short course around a small dam, while the other members of the tribe 'pave' the way for their biker through slip sliding and other sticky situations. The rivalry is tangible and tribes often see their rivals literally 'slip' out of contention !
Task 2
Treasure hunt & Archery
The Treasure Hunters get a map of the Nature reserve, penetrate the indigenous forest and follow clues to the Bonus spot. Should rendezvous time lapse with no proof of a visit to the Bonus spot, the team will be penalized. Meanwhile, the other half of the team receives instruction on how to hit the target at Archery. Each Archery tribe member gets to shoot a number of arrows and a collective tally of hits is made. Subject to aggregate placings, tribes get handed over certain amounts of bonus beans (best tribe most beans 2nd tribe less, etc.), to carry over to stage 3…..
Task 3
Building Rafts
Tribes make their way leisurely to the river. Arriving at the Great River, named by the great King Shaka, teams will find a market, with stalls selling Raft material for beans. Tribes have to barter with the sellers, for material to build rafts with. Of course, completed rafts will get points and teams with more beans have the advantage for building better rafts and floating them easier !.... Depending on favourable conditions, our Sellers will be young people from the local under advantaged communities, generating funds for our 'Broader youth Horizons' project.
SNACK LUNCH TIME !
Task 4
PorttoStarboard !
Having evaluated the rafts, leading tribes get the technology (e.g. paddles !) to maneuver, while trailing tribes would have to battle with more members on the raft and less technology ! On the word GO, tribes compete at steering their rafts and splashing about, Port to Starboard, upon commands of their Captain, while supporters provide valuable points for being NOISY, while shouting support.
Task 5
Clay Pigeon Shooting
Upon landing their proud craft, all survivors move over to the shooting range. Once settled down, participants each get a turn to take up rifles. Tribes score points for hitting the targets, as well as adhering to instructions.
Task 6
Beach Action
Once on the beach, each team receives a set of clues. If you shot skew, your clues are crappy ! These clues will lead participants to hiding places of equipment/ accessories, used in the making of an item, e.g. a Kite. As soon as the team's kite has been airborne for (a lifetime long) 2 minutes, a place in the race is rewarded. Thereafter, the kites are inspected for quality and craftsmanship, earning further points. Other beach action includes the building of a mini 4x4 obstacle course, and to get your radio controlled 4x4 across, with the least accidents and casualties
*Although this Challenge is best done, completing the Tasks/ Stages in succession, they can easily enough be isolated. This is often done, should a client have a time/ budget constraint.
The event has come to an end. A beach braai with Prize giving Ceremony can be arranged on request
Logistics
* The duration of the challenge is 6 -7 hours, which includes 'snack time' but excludes a beach braai (R 50 - 150, depending on menu). * The challenge can be tailor made, e.g. shortened/ lengthened, made more/less physical, price adjusted, omitting one or two pursuits.
